Proponents of a new casino and hotel in Delta have released preliminary plans on what the new attraction could look like and entail.

Gateway Casinos & Entertainment says the $70-million complex will be built at the 11-acre site of Delta Town and Country Inn, near the south end of the George Massey Tunnel – next to the interchange where Highway 99 and Highway 17A intersect.

“The Town and Country location, with a number of gaming and non-gaming attractions, would create a local entertainment destination in Delta for residents and visitors alike,” Tanya Gabara, a spokesperson for Gateway, told Daily Hive.

“It would also allow Delta to significantly advance its tourism strategy and deliver on the tourism objectives set out in the strategy.”

The overall development will have a floor area of 200,000 sq. ft., with the casino taking up 45,000 sq. ft. The proposed mix of slot machines and table games has not been finalized, but in terms of casino floor area the Delta casino will be roughly half the size of the company’s Grand Villa Casino in Burnaby and Starlight Casino in New Westminster.

There will also be a hotel with between 110 and 120 rooms and three restaurants: Match Eatery & Public House, The Buffet, and Atlas Steak + Fish. Each restaurant will be approximately 5,000 sq. ft., and Match and Atlas will both have a seasonal outdoor patio.

Plans do not entail a purpose-built entertainment and show venue, but there will be about 6,000-sq-ft of meeting and conference space.

There will be ample free parking, which will be surrounded by green space.

Gateway estimates the casino will create 700 new jobs upon opening, generate an annual payroll of $25 million, and provide the City of Delta with between $1.5 million to $3 million in new revenue.

The proposed attraction is a replacement and relocation of the company’s Newton Community Gaming Centre.

Both Surrey and Delta were considered for the new attraction, but only Delta expressed interest to the BC Lottery Corporation (BCLC).

The project requires the final approval of Delta City Council.
