Kenny Rogers Casino Rama
Kenny Rogers was fabulous!! Casino Rama Resort - Rama. It was a wonderful show. Kenny is a great entertainer with a great sense of humor. Even if he couldn't move around a lot he still has a nice voice. This was my fourth time seeing him at Casino Rama and I am glad I didn't miss his last performance. His band is the best and his guest singer.

I grew up listening to a variety of music, but country was a genre that I really didn’t develop an affinity for until I was in grade 11. Even then, I only listened to Shania Twain, Billy Ray Cyrus, Reba…”New Country” as it was called. I made a few exceptions in my musical repertoire though for the classic country sounds of John Denver and Kenny Rogers.
I don’t like Western movies. I am not a fan of gunslingers and saloons. I do, however, enjoy “The Gambler” series of movies, starring Kenny Rogers in the titular role. I also enjoy “The Coward of the County”. Both are also titles of songs recorded by Kenny.
I saw Kenny Rogers live at Casino Rama in Orillia, ON. I was 19 and it was a joint birthday gift for my mom and me. Casino Rama had yet to build their world-class Entertainment Centre, so the concert was held in a huge tent. the weather that day was crappy. It stormed during the entire concert, sometimes knocking the power out.

Kenny Rogers didn’t care though. He just kept belting out hit after hit after hit, even through the times when the power to the microphone was cut because of the power outages. A true performer, I thought at the time.
I learned a lot about Kenny Rogers that night, including the fact that he had sung jazz before he was country music’s “Gambler”. I remember listening to him sing and thinking that he could sing the phone book and it would sound amazing. Then he sang a song that reduced me to tears:
I was beyond stunned when he started singing, “Gee, it’s great after being out late/Walking my baby back home”. I felt tears well in my eyes and slide down my cheeks as he sang “Walking My Baby Back Home”. His smooth voice washed over me as memories of my grandfather, who had died in 1998, ran through my head. Papa was a jazz pianist and our song was “Walking My Baby Back Home”. He would play it over and over again for me.
I’d had no idea that Kenny Rogers sang jazz. I wish he’d recorded more of his jazz days because he was really good.
The world as a whole lost an incredible joy and gift the day “The Gambler” finally “broke even”.
